Curry bashing - who's bashing whom?

It's official....the media circus has found its new darling.....the aussie race attacks, lovingly nicknamed - 'Curry Bashing' (Apparently, the world thinks we are the only country that makes curries).

The newspapers, TV channels on their prime time are flooded with stomach churning images and videos of helpless students being beaten by a gang of bullies or hospitalised in total agony. All this, i agree, makes me angry....very angry!!
But hang on a second, isn't that what they are after. The circus of media. To get me angry, to get a reaction out of me...which says "F**k these aussies" and to think of it...that's what i litreally want to do....i would want to beat up every australian i can find in my sight and seek revenge from him for a crime he did not commit and i did not bear.

Allow me to clarify myself.

The moment the word 'Aussie attacks' or 'curry bashing' is mentioned in our vicinity, our mind is flooded by violent images that have been provided to us by the vigilant newspapers and TV channels and makes us cry out in sheer anger. Quite frankly, the media is our eyes to what's happening there. We see what they want to show us. And we see it in the exact packaging they want to show us in.

I am sure most people would concurr the media is doing a great job of showing whats happening there....of bringing the whole scene on the world stage for people to watch. They'd even say that this reporting will help the indians to get their justice there.

I disagree!! (Not entirely though!)

Let's keep the rage aside for just a second and ponder over the situation. In my opinion, the media fire has to stop. And by media fire, i very specifically mean the sensationalisation of news. We need reporting, of course we do!! But we can surely do without the sensational headlines and provocative scripts. TRPs are generated, circulation of newspapers is increased....but what is the long term effect?? In the hurry to get our justice for the deeds done by a handful of people, why are we accusing the entire ethnic community for it? (Is every australian the same?)

Here's the rub....there are....and this is a fact...there are always and always a handful of idiots, bigots, racists and rednecks in every society. People who have no compassion, remorse or some unfortuante ones who've been victims of some terrible circumstances and events.

I strongly believe racism, favouritism, biased opinions (or any emotional vice) are all inevitable byproducts of human pondering and thought process and always there will be a few who will believe in the superiority of a race or group (almost brutally!)

More imporatantly, before we expect compassion from the rest of the world....look into your own backyard ( I live in delhi and see a few idiots treating people from north east in a way that makes me tighten my fist and throw a punch at him).

My entire point is that the mindless race for TRPs and higher circulation converts every morsel of news into a theatrical performance. And once again, a long term hatred and opinion is manufactured to achieve a short term target and this long term hatred can never be good for Indians staying there.

The media has created a brand name now...'curry bashing'. It's like an investment, a fixed asset. It can be put to use anytime in the future, whenever there is anything that is even remotely connected to the sentiment attached with the concept.

It's very difficult and almost inhuman to expect a lenient view and forgiveness from the people who have suffered these attacks. But for those who haven't...please remember, the earth spins stably by gravity, the humans live and planes fly on air....most things in the universe survive on a very delicate balance aided by things we can't see but only feel.
In case of socities and civilizations.....It's compassion and respect!!

Its necessary to support our kin and people. But let's not be too hasty and gullible to vent our anger on the targets which are fabricated and not real. Only the gulity should be punished!

  2. Couldnt agree more.My cousin is in Melbourne and all this 'sansani khez' news is what worried me so much about how he is doing and if he is being treated alright n all. I just called him up yesterday and he had the same thing to say. media has made it much bigger than wht it is... n where its happening is one of those area where there are a lot of thiefs / mobsters / gangs. which country doesnt hv those??? this incident started with a 'simple' case of gangs assaulting the victim to grab his valuables...but it was made to be a racist incident and then the word spread and then there were more.
I do agree media actually starts the fire and then adds fuel to it .. just for trps... its just sad to see how irresponsible they can get.
my cousin & million indians more there are doing fine .. they go about their daily routine without any problems... will anybody show this side of the story... i doubt it... its not trp friendly!

  3. There is a solution khemka darling....there always is. It's just that we don't want to take the effort when we know we won't get tangible and quick results.
I keep talking about the snowball effect...every big change starts with your smallest effort.
We need to put in our effort, we may not be able to see the effect it creates in the short term but in the longer run the results will be there...just don't shun your personal responsibility and try to change the mindset of one person at a time....you'll see the change sooner or later!!

  4. You hit the nail on the head Shivani...it's not TRP friendly!!

I am really sad to see the state of indian television in particular at this time...(news channels included) cos they don't provide any news...they create drama episodes like any other soap.

It is not possible to expect everyone to make an well informed choice coz the resources at their hands might not be in plenty. But compassion and respect is a virtue that everybody can generate in abundance if their human conscience is aroused. That is my message behind this particular blog.

  5. Maneesh, we all had a cirlcle of well educated, well informed people and everyone seems to go by the theory that media is responsible for creating unnecessary hype this thing happened in case of racist attacks in australia or in case of 26/11 where media created an opinion amongst people that India should attack pak and demolish it completely (as if every paki is a terrorist.

The problem become more complex when the same group of elite people (well educated, well informed people) goes for their daily dose of current affairs, next morning these people will speak the same language what they see it on news channel, what they hear their favorite journalist reporting (or i say sensationalizing) on the idiot box.

I believe everybody is that busy with their daily cores that they just don't have time to analyze what they hear and they just go with the flow, after all you tend to believe what you see..............

  6. but let me ask why should I bother to spend time on analyzing the issues and the reported news when I could get my little fame or socialize amongst friends and bosses by simply reiterating what we hear and what we read in newspapers what's the need of putting my brains on such insignificant things when it don't bother me at all??

so next time when we say media is resposible for creating issues when there is none its not media it's "WE" the people of india who are responsible because "WE" live on gossips and the masala chats whether it be the national issues or some trivial office politics or tiffs between friends "WE" as a society have always lived and devoured on gossips and sensationalization, its there in our genes guys. so why blame media???

Its we who want to listen and spread gossips and media is just building there business on the human psyche....

  7. An excellent point of view Pulkit...my apologies for the late reply.
I am happy that you have pointed out a big factor that allows bad to become worse. But as you can see, there is a big difference in the educated, elite class(no matter how busy they might be in their daily grind) and the people who have no choice but to eat what is served to them.

The difference is - That you realise what you are doing wrong!! You know that you are gossiping and feasting on the masala. You identify the issue and that is step one in eradicating any problem. Its not easy to be a bit of social outcast and state the truth....but it sure as hell is necessary, because only the naive would believe that life would keep going in the same revolutions unaffected by these factors.
As far as the media is concerned...the society may have wounded itself because of inevitable human nature but the blame of making the cut bigger is definitely media's greed.
I am only but urging everyone to use their intelligence, discretion and compassion to see through the muck and draw the line.
Bosses and colleagues might have a short laugh or agreement on the popular version of the story....but with them, the onus lies on you to realise that being human sometimes more important than being a sheep in a herd...building your rapport with them is your choice...do it quick or do it right!!
